Nasmyth Group, a leading global supplier of precision products and engineering services for aerospace and other industries, is delighted to announce that it will be formally launching the Nasmyth Apprenticeship Academy in January 2015.

This important new initiative will build on, and provide a new focus for, the investment the Group has already made in the apprenticeship schemes it has been running very successfully for a number of years. Currently, apprentices represent some 8% of the Group’s total workforce and it is envisaged that this will increase in line with a growing demand across all areas of the Group’s activities.

Seen as critical to achieving this expansion and establishing a new level of excellence, the Academy will be responsible for developing collaborative projects with local schools in order to encourage more pupils to consider a career in engineering, arranging fulfilling work placements, and setting up and administering innovative sponsorship opportunities. It will also have a key role to play in equipping the Group’s most experienced technical staff with the training skills required to contribute to the apprentices’ learning process.

Through its wholly owned subsidiaries, Nasmyth Group is involved in the manufacture of high performance components in a variety of metals and super alloys, the welding and assembly of complex structures, and the provision of protective plasma, plasticized, chemical and heat treatments.

As a result, it is able to offer its apprentices opportunities to acquire the breadth of skills on which the future of the UK’s aerospace industry depends; skills ranging from the programming of advanced machine tools producing safety-critical components to the welding, assembly and testing of complex structures, from the purchasing of specialist materials and the scheduling of factory throughput to dealing with customers from around the world.

Peter Smith, Chairman and CEO of Nasmyth Group, commented:
“Apprenticeships are vital to the replenishment and development of our skills and capabilities and we know that to attract young people with the best potential we have to offer the best in terms of quality and variety of experience, support and real career prospects. Creating our new Apprenticeship Academy will help us to achieve that. Investing in apprentices is an investment in their future, in our future, and in the future of UK engineering.”
